Homeland chief: Gyrocopter came in ‘under the radar’

A Capitol Police officer flashes a thumbs up after inspecting the small helicopter a man landed on the West Lawn of the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Police arrested a man who steered his tiny, one-person helicopter onto the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, astonishing spring tourists and prompting a temporary lockdown of the Capitol Visitor Center. Capitol Police didn't immediately identify the pilot or comment on his motive, but a Florida postal carrier named Doug Hughes took responsibility for the stunt on a website where he said he was delivering letters to all 535 members of Congress in order to draw attention to campaign finance corruption. U.S. objects to Boston bomber’s lawyers’ call to ‘look deep inside’

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is pictured in this handout photo presented as evidence by the U.S. Attorney's Office in BostonBy Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) – Federal prosecutors on Thursday objected to what they said was a call by lawyers for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev that jurors "look deep inside" themselves when considering whether they believe the testimony of foreign witnesses. In a filing in Boston federal court, prosecutors said they objected to what they said was the defense's request that U.S. District Judge George O'Toole instruct the jurors to consider whether they are naturally prejudiced in favor of "people like themselves" and if they tend to discredit the testimony of foreign witnesses. Both prosecutors and defense witnesses are set to begin calling another round of witnesses, with the trial's sentencing phase expected to take four weeks before the jury begins deliberations on Tsarnaev's fate.

Rape accuser sues football star Jameis Winston in Florida court

By Letitia Stein TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) – College football star Jameis Winston, a contender for the top pick in the upcoming National Football League draft, was sued on Thursday in Florida court by a woman who claims he raped her in 2012, highlighting concerns about his off-the-field reputation. The lawsuit seeks financial damages from the quarterback at a sensitive time for the NFL, which has come under scrutiny for its handling of allegations of rape and domestic violence by its players. Winston did not face criminal charges in the alleged rape and was cleared of any conduct code violations as a student at Florida State University. The woman filed the lawsuit in a state court in Orlando, in part seeking to force Winston to answer questions under oath about what happened, said her attorney, John Clune.
